The Dyslexia Unit

What do we do?

We thoroughly assess all students who are referred to us by various means. A student is then assigned to a specialist tutor for 1:1 support for the duration of his or her main college course. We are currently supporting about 180 students.

With the student, we then produce an individual learning plan which we monitor and update, according to a student’s changing needs. We liaise with course tutors to ensure that students receive maximum benefit from support.

Why do we do it?

Because we have found that students who accept support stand a 95 per cent chance of achieving their qualification aims.

How do we do it?

All students at K College are given the opportunity to take a Quickscan assessment which not only gives information on individual learning styles but also indicates whether a student might have any dyslexic tendencies.

Further assessment is then done by qualified members of the team, and when appropriate, by an educational psychologist. In addition, some students are already aware that they have or might have dyslexia and so refer themselves to us for assessment and 1:1 support.

When do we do it?

At any time of year, although we like to see students as early as possible in their course.

What resources do we have?

K College is well equipped with computers, printers and scanner, as well as specialist programmes found to be dyslexia-friendly. Tuition is given on the use of these. The Learning Resource Centre carries a good selection of books on dyslexia and study skills that students can borrow.
