Climate & Clothing
Temperatures in Tonbridge vary from an average night temperature of 23° F (-10°C) in January, to daytime temperatures of above 87° F (35°C) in July/August. Night freezing may occur between mid- October and early May. Daytime freezing is rare but can happen. Humidity varies little, from an average of 80% in November, December and January to around 55% in the summer months. Snowfalls sometimes occur from December to March, but rarely last for long. Rainfall is common all the year round. High pollen counts may be registered from April to October.
For weather forecasts for Tonbridge and surrounding areas please visit the Tonbridge weather webpage.
For the latest 5-day weather forecast for London, see the BBC's website.
You may also notice the variation in the hours of daylight between summer and winter. In winter it will get light at about 08.00 and be dark again by 16.00; in summer it will get light at about 05.00 and not get dark until after 22.00.
You should equip yourself for the ever changing weather in the UK with suitable clothing to cover all possibilities. Even though it will probably be easier and cheaper to buy some of your clothing after you have arrived in London and you can judge exactly what you need, we strongly recommend that you pack a warm coat or raincoat in your hand luggage. For the cold and damp weather from October to March you should also have some waterproof footwear, but this can also be bought cheaply in the UK.
In general, dress on campus is very informal and embraces all tastes and fashions. Dress is also casual for outings to pubs, restaurants and theatres, but some night clubs will require a smarter dress code. If you are unsure how to dress for a particular occasion, please don't be afraid to ask.
