Popular Music Performance - BA (Hons) Top-up Degree (University of Kent)

Attention: open in a new window. PDF

Course Code: 3869

Duration : 1 year

Having a broad base of skills to work from, and by now a confident and competent performer, for the final BA year you will try your hand at some challenging jazz-related genres, including latin jazz and rock-jazz fusion. You will get to grips with the work of artists such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, John Scofield, Jeff Beck, Weather Report, Steely Dan, Diana Krall, Cassandra Wilson, Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones and Tom Waits. Our carefully-chosen repertoire list reflects a multitude of different approaches, textures, forms, tonalities and moods, and offers great opportunities for improvisation, creative interpretation, musical risk-taking and development of technical prowess.

Meanwhile your academic work - dissertation and presentation - will reflect an advanced understanding of the genres, and will require an informed, analytical and critical approach, and extensive research.

This year you will choose 60 credits worth of option modules - half of the total credits - so that you can focus on your chosen career areas in more detail, alongside the rigorous training offered within the core modules.

Entry Requirements:

Foundation Degree or HND in Popular Music with Merit/Distinction profile.
GCSE grades A-C in Maths and English Language.
All candidates will take part in an audition that may include: sight-reading, aural tests, theory and general musicianship, chart reading, instrumental techniques, improvisation and general knowledge of popular music.
