Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair - Light Vehicle NVQ 2

Duration : 1 year

The NVQs are based upon Automotive Skills Limited National Occupational Standards for Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, and therefore form an integral part of the ASL Apprenticeship Framework.

Course Content:


VCQ is an integral part of IMI SSC Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship Framework (Light Vehicle Route). Therefore learners (normally aged 16-25) who are keen to build a career in the industry can take this VCQ as part of the Apprenticeship framework.

Learners are required to demonstrate all of the evidence requirements, learning outcomes, assessment criteria through workplace evidence. Full guidance documents and assessment records are supplied.

The knowledge component of this qualification is also independently assessed via online testing. The tests are mapped to each knowledge unit's learning outcomes and assessment criteria to ensure coverage. These tests are marked electronically by IMI Awards.

Mandatory Units:


  • Contribute to workplace good housekeeping
  • Ensure your own actions reduce risks to Health and Safety
  • Maintain positive working relationships
  • Carry out routine vehicle maintenance
  • Remove and replace engine units and components
  • Remove and replace engine units and components + (1 Unit from each of Optional Units B and Optional Units C to be completed)
Optional Units B:

  • Conduct pre and post work vehicle inspections
  • Valet vehicles
  • Remove and replace vehicle transmission and driveline units and components.
Optional Units C:

  • Remove and replace vehicle chassis units and components
  • Remove and replace commercial vehicle chassis units and components

Entry Requirements:

They must be employed in an appropriate setting within the industry - for a minimum of 16 hours per week but preferably in full time employment.
