Professional Practice and Industry Knowledge

In your first year we spend 3-4 days in Bristol at the Encounters Film Festival (the best short film festival in England) where we enjoy screenings of media from around the world together with Best of British and student competitions. Later in the year its off to Earls Court Exhibition Centre, London for Broadcast Expo or the BFI, South Bank in London or an exhibition at the Tate. In between there are guest speakers from industry who come to us. And of course we are busy with projects for our external clients. In addition there are opportunities to attend industry events in London for the Royal Television Society or at the London Studios.

All the tutors are industry practitioners with considerable experience of working for both the major broadcasters (BBC, C4 and ITV) and the smaller independent companies (who make up the majority of the industry by the way). So you will gain a great deal of inside knowledge about what employers want from new entrants. And unlike many courses the time spent with your tutors is usually a minimum of 15-20 hours per week. So there is plenty of contact and opportunity to work with them on your study projects. You will also have plenty of access to our facilities of cameras, edit and design suites (with Final Cut Pro, AVID and Adobe Creative Studio). And of course our studios a full-size TV studio and dedicated gallery alongside our post-production area.

The course is full-time with teaching over three days and the rest of the week devoted to project work or work placement. In addition you will be expected to spend 15 -18 hours a week on individual study during term.

Assessment is by assignment on a continuous basis throughout the course.
