Dental Nursing - Level 3 Diploma

Attention: open in a new window. PDF

Course Code: 4068

From July 2008 all dental nurses will have needed to be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) or be enrolled on an approved training course in order to practise in the UK. In order to register, a dental nurse will need to hold a qualification that is approved by the GDC.
This course leads to an approved qualification that is nationally recognised by employers, and encourages the learners to demonstrate their competence in both a workplace and educational setting.

The Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing focuses on direct chairside work and support during a range of dental treatments: the worker would need to have considerable knowledge and skills in relation to dental equipment, instruments and materials and be able to work as a key member of the oral healthcare team. It has been built on a number of principles: encouraging access by those groups of staff for whom they are designed: promote good quality practice and high quality services; help the sector respond to changing requirements; encourage transfer and progression; be consistent with future legislation for statutory registration.
The award is based on National Occupational Standards developed by Skills for Health (the Sector Skills Council for Health) and on the curriculum set by the General Dental Council, it covers areas such as Health and Safety, Control of Infection, Basic Life Support, Maintaining materials and equipment for clinical procedures and providing support for the patient and dentist during the provision of oral health care.
You will be assessed in practical situations and will collect evidence in a course portfolio, which will be verified by City & Guilds. A written exam, lasting 90 minutes is taken at the College and marked by the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN).

Entry Requirements:

An interview with the course tutor will be arranged at the earliest opportunity after receiving your application.
Applicants must be fully vaccinated, have received an appropriate workplace induction (including Health & Safety and Confidentiality), provide a named supervisor and keep a log book of all their training.
English and Maths GCSE Grades at Level C or above are preferred.

Career Options:

Following successful completion of the course and registration with the GDC, candidates may wish to study for a NEBDN post-qualification certificate in a specialist area, such as the OHE (Oral Health Education) or Certificate in Dental Radiology.
