What do the levels mean?

Apprenticeships are very popular programmes designed by employers that provide paid work-experience, training and qualifications to people aged 16 and above.

An Apprenticeship framework comprises:

  • A work-based qualification (NVQ), assessed in the workplace, demonstrating practical skills linked to the job
and other qualifications valued by employers such as:
  • Functional skills, which show competency in English, maths or I.C.T applied to the workplace
  • Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS); they include creative thinking, independent enquiry, reflective learner, effective participator, self management and team working.
Qualification:

In the workplace, candidates must complete the following units:

Mandatory units:

  • Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
  • Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Shampoo and condition hair and scalp
  • Cut mens hair using basic techniques
  • Cut facial hair to shape
Optional units (2 units to be completed)

  • Dry mens hair
  • Change hair colour using basic techniques
  • Perm and neutralise hair using basic techniques
  • Perm, relax and neutralise hair
  • Style hair using basic plaiting techniques and added hair
  • Fulfill salon reception duties
  • Promote additional products or services to clients
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
  • Provide scalp massage services
At college, candidates will study functional skills in Maths and English at Level 1.
Assessment is by practical and written assessments, coursework and oral questions.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants must be aged 16 or over. They must be employed in a barber/hairdressing salon setting for a minimum of 30 hours a week (including work and College).
Ideally applicants should have at least 4 GCSEs at grade D or above, including maths and English. All applicants will be individually interviewed and assessed.
