Course Code: 4010

Duration : 7 weeks 11:00-14:00

This course offers examination practice and preparation for students wishing to take the Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE)

The FCE is the Cambridge ESOL exam for people who can use everyday written and spoken English at an upper-intermediate level. It is an ideal exam for people who want to use English for work or study purposes and it is recognised by universities and employers throughout the world. It indicates sufficient proficiency in English to be of practical use in clerical, secretarial and managerial jobs in many industries, in particular tourism, where contact with English speakers is required.

Successful candidates have the ability to deal with routine letters and telephone enquiries, and to cope with some non-academic training courses and simple textbooks and articles.
FCE is suitable for students possessing a standard of English that is adequate for many practical everyday purposes, including business and study. Students at FCE level can be expected to:

  • Understand the main ideas of complex pieces of writing;
  • Keep up a conversation on a fairly wide range of topics, expressing opinions and presenting arguments;
  • Produce clear, detailed writing, expressing opinions and explaining the advantages and disadvantages of different points of view.
Your preparation for FCE will give you these kinds of practical language skills.

This qualification is ideal if you want to work or study abroad or to develop a career which requires language skills (e.g. business, medicine, engineering). It is also useful preparation if you are working towards higher level exams, such as Cambridge CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) and Cambridge CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English).
Teaching will utilise interactive methods and a variety of resources.

The FCE has five examination papers:

  • Reading (1 hour)
  • Writing (1 hour 20 minutes)
  • Use of English (45 minutes)
  • Listening (40 minutes)
  • Speaking (14 minutes)
Exam scripts are sent to Cambridge ESOL for marking and grading.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants will possess a good basic level of English, such as the standard required to pass the Cambridge Preliminary English Test (PET). All new applicants are required to sit a 40 minute entry test prior to application.
