English Literature is enormous fun but it is not a soft option. You will be required to read extensively and to provide analysis of the ideas and structures of texts. If you enjoy reading and thinking for yourself, expressing your ideas both orally and on paper, this is the course for you.

A2 English Literature has modules:
1. Modern prose: you will produce a coursework folder of 2,000-2,500 words on modern novels or short stories.
2. Poetry and drama: you will study one play and the works of one poet from approved lists
3. Criticism and comparison: this module brings together the skills you have developed throughout the course and is in two sections - unprepared prose or poetry and comparative work.

There are opportunities to take examinations in January and June. Module 2 is assessed by an open text examination. Modules 3 is assessed by a closed text examination. Modules 1 is assessed by coursework.

Trips and visits are regarded as integral to the study of English at advanced level. You will have many opportunities to attend productions, workshops and conferences throughout your period of study. English Literature students will have the opportunity of a residential excursion to Stratford-Upon-Avon.
