Film Studies A-Level

Attention: open in a new window. PDF

Course Code: 4050

Duration : 1 year

The Film Studies A-Level can be studied as part of the following pathways:
- Arts (Tonbridge only)
- Drama (Tonbridge only)
- Media
- Express

You will gain an insight into films and their production. The aim is to go beyond just watching and enjoying films; some will be unfamiliar and challenging. The emphasis is on analysing and developing a personal response to the range of films and film excerpts viewed.

At AS Level you will examine the interaction between film and the spectator. You will be encouraged to use your own examples throughout the course. You will examine mise-en-scene and performance; cinematography; sound; narrative and narration; genre; and the technical terms and ideas associated with these aspects of film study. Your coursework will put this study into practice in a detailed analysis of a film extract and a practical piece which will result in a storyboard, an extended step outline or a short film. You will also study the Hollywood and British film
industries, and the role of audiences in relation to them. You will undertake a comparative study of two US films and a topic in British cinema taken from a range of options.

At A2 Level your coursework will be an individual research study of an aspect of film or cinema that interests you, and a practical project in which you produce a short film, a screenplay, or an
extended step outline for a 30-minute documentary related to your research study. You will study three topics for the examination: World Cinema e.g. surrealism; Spectatorship e.g. popular film and emotional response; A critical study of a film that has given rise to much debate e.g. Fight Club or Talk to Her.

Assessment will be a combination of coursework and exams.

Entry Requirements:

For AS Levels, you need five GCSE passes at A*-C, including English and maths, as well as one grade B. Other relevant qualifications can be discussed at interview.

If you have grades A and B at GCSE or a strong overall GCSE profile, well encourage you to study four AS courses.

To progress from AS to A2 you are expected to gain at least a grade C in the AS subject studied.
