Attention: open in a new window. PDF

Course Code: 4047

Duration : 1 year

The History A-Level can be studied as part of the following pathways:
- Arts (Tonbridge only)
- Humanities
- Media
- Social Science

Do you enjoy thinking for yourself, examining the evidence and reaching your own conclusions? Explaining why events happened and why people behaved in certain ways in the past? Being involved in challenging arguments both on paper and in debate? History is the subject for you!

At AS Level you will study:
- European and world history studies: From autocracy to communism, Russia 1894 - 1944
- British history enquiries (a document study): The condition of England 1815 - 1853

At A2 Level you will study:
- Historical interpretations and investigations: Britain under Margaret Thatcher
- Historical themes: Russia and its rulers 1855 - 1964

Assessment for both the AS and A2 are through written papers and coursework.

Entry Requirements:

For AS Levels you will need five GCSE passes at grades A*-C, including English and maths, as well as one grade B. If you have taken GCSE History, you need to have attained a C or above. Those who have not taken the GCSE will be considered for the course, but since communication and literacy skills are so important, a grade C or above is required in subjects that demonstrate those skills such as English Literature or Religious Studies. Other relevant qualifications can be discussed at interview.

If you have grades A and B at GCSE or a strong overall GCSE profile, well encourage you to study four AS courses.

To progress from AS to A2 you are expected to gain at least a grade C in the AS subject studied.
