You will enjoy this subject if you want to find out how the legal system works and you are interested in current legal issues, such as reforms to the law on murder or whether euthanasia should be legal. The topics covered will provide fascinating insights into legal processes and structures and give you a clear understanding of law in action.

At AS Level you will study:
English Legal System and Sources of Law: concentrating on various aspects of the English legal system, including the courts; alternative methods of dispute resolution; police powers; principles of sentencing; the judiciary; the legal profession; provision and funding of legal services; lay magistrates; juries; doctrine of precedent; Acts of Parliament; delegated legislation; statutory interpretation and European Union law.

At A2 Level you will study:
Criminal Law, looking at real cases in order to see who is criminally liable and what laws have been broken. This topic concentrates on principles of criminal liability; actus reus; mens rea; strict liability; attempts; general defences; murder; manslaughter; non-fatal offences against the person; theft; burglary and robbery.

Assessment for both the AS and A2 Levels consists of two papers.

Entry Requirements:

For AS Levels you will need five GCSE passes at grades A*-C, including English and maths, as well as one grade B. Other relevant qualifications can be discussed at interview.

If you have grades A and B at GCSE or a strong overall GCSE profile, well encourage you to study four AS courses.

To progress from AS to A2 you are expected to gain at least a grade C in the AS subject studied.
