If you are interested in the power of words and are keen to discover how the written and spoken language works in our changing world, this is the course for you! Dynamic and relevant,
this course is an exploration of how our language has evolved over time and there is also the opportunity to produce creative writing of your own.
For the AS Level, you will study:
Unit 1: Categorising Texts - the exam has two sections: Grouping Texts together examines similarities in the deployment of linguistic devices; Language and Gender, identifies the linguistic terms and theories associated with the use of language by and between genders in Britain today.
Unit 2: Creating Texts - two assignments of original writing considering genre, purpose and audience.
For the A2 Level, you will study:
Unit 3: Developing Language - the exam has two sections: Language Change, which requires identification of linguistic terms, methods, concepts and theories associated with changes in language from the 18th century to the present day; Child Language Acquisition, which is the study of how children learn to speak, read and write in Britain today.
Unit 4: Investigating Language - two assignments, one investigating a particular aspect of language use; and one exploring a media text.
The AS and A2 Levels are assessed through a combination of examinations and coursework.
Entry Requirements:
For AS Levels you will need five GCSE passes at grades A*-C, including English (Higher Tier preferred) and maths, as well as one grade B. Other relevant qualifications can be discussed at interview.If you have grades A and B at GCSE or a strong overall GCSE profile, well encourage you to study four AS courses.
To progress from AS to A2 you are expected to gain at least a grade C in the AS subject studied.
