Government and Politics AS Level (Edexcel)

Attention: open in a new window. PDF

Course Code: 1568

The A Level in Government and Politics will suit any student who is interested in the political system and who wishes to learn more. Whilst every attempt is made to make use of practical examples, it is important to remember that the course involves thinking about theories and the working of institutions. No coursework options are available. As such, students are expected to listen, make notes and ask questions in class. All students studying AS Government and Politics will also study AS Citizenship. AS Government and Politics combines well with a number of subjects, particularly AS Law, AS History and AS Sociology.

The syllabus covers 3 modules for AS:
1. People and Politics: democracy, voting systems, political parties, pressure groups
2. Governing the UK: the constitution, parliament, PM and cabinet, judiciary
3. The changing UK system: constitutional reform (voting systems, devolution, house of Lords, Europe).

Assessment:

There are opportunities to take examinations in January and June. All modules are assessed by examinations.

Trips and Visits: We visit the House of Commons and European institutions. In addition, local MPs come to the College as visiting speakers.

Entry Requirements:

To study 3 AS levels, students need at least 5 GCSEs grade C and above, including a B in English. There may be additional subject entry criteria.

Career Options:

On successful completion of the course, you can progress onto A2 Level.
