Law AS Level (AQA)

Attention: open in a new window. PDF

Course Code: 1555

Law is one of the foundations of society. We are ruled by law and the law gives us the rules whereby we may resolve disputes, overcome problems and in some cases reinforce the values of society. Few schools offer law as a subject though most of us have some basic knowledge that we can bring to a course. This knowledge may stem from personal experience, fictional lawyer programmes on TV, the coverage of crime stories in the press or a complementary course such as citizenship, history or politics.

The syllabus covers 3 modules for AS:
1. Law making: this covers the sources of law, parliamentary, judicial and EU law.
2. Dispute solving: this covers the courts and the alternatives to them; financing of advice and representation; the legal profession, judges and laypersons in the law
3. The concept of liability: an introduction to criminal liability; an introduction to tort law; sanctions, remedies and capacity

Module 2 is assessed in January and Modules 2 and 3 are assessed by examination the following June.

Trips and Visits: Opportunities to visit local magistrates, county and crown courts are integral to the course and visits to the "Old Bailey" and the High Courts in the Strand are further possibilities.
