Attention: open in a new window. PDF

Course Code: 1554

English Literature is enormous fun but it is not a soft option. You will be required to read extensively and to provide analysis of the ideas and structures of texts. If you enjoy reading and thinking for yourself, expressing your ideas both orally and on paper, this is the course for you.

The syllabus covers 3 modules for AS:
1.Drama and poetry: you will study one play from an approved list and, where possible, we will see the play in production. You will study a range of poems written from 1770 to the present day.
2.Pre-1900 prose: you will study one nineteenth century novel from an approved list, considering the context in which it was written
3.Shakespeare in context: you will study one Shakespeare play and produce a coursework folder of approximately 1,500 words.

There are opportunities to take examinations in January and June. Module 1 is assessed by an open text examination. Module 2 is assessed by a closed text examination. Module 3 is assessed by coursework.

Trips and visits are regarded as integral to the study of English at advanced level. You will have many opportunities to attend productions, workshops and conferences throughout your period of study. English Literature students will have the opportunity of a residential excursion to Stratford-Upon-Avon.

Entry Requirements:

To study 3 AS levels, students need at least 5 GCSEs grade C and above, including a B in English. There may be additional subject entry criteria.

Career Options:

On successful completion of the course, you can progress onto A2 Level.
