Sociology AS Level (OCR)

Attention: open in a new window. PDF

Course Code: 1544

Sociology is about you and everything you do! Basically, Sociology is the study of society and as a Sociology student you will learn how society shapes people's ideas and their behaviour around others and you will learn how people interact together and how these interactions can, in turn, shape societies.
Sociological questions include: What influences our social identity? Why do we behave in certain ways in certain situations? Why is there inequality in society? How and why has British society changed? Sociology does not depend on commonsense to answer these questions. Instead, competing theories, based on social scientific research, have been developed, in an attempt to answer the questions and explain how societies work.

The specification covers three modules for AS:
1. The individual and society
2. Sociological research skills
3.Culture and socialisation

Module 1 is assessed by a one-hour exam in January. Module 2 is assessed by coursework that will be completed during the first half of the second term and module 3 is assessed by a one and a half hour exam in May.

Trips and visits: there are several opportunities to attend national Sociology conferences and organised revision events in London in both the first and second years. There is also an opportunity to visit the University of Kent at Canterbury to meet some 'real life' sociologists and to learn from them how they carry out research and how great it is to be a sociologist!
