Apprenticeships are very popular programmes designed by employers that provide paid work-experience, training and qualifications to people aged 16 and above.
An Apprenticeship framework comprises:
- A work-based qualification (NVQ), assessed in the workplace, demonstrating practical skills linked to the job
- A technical certificate, achieved at College, showing the theoretical knowledge relevant to the job
and other qualifications valued by employers such as:
- Functional skills, which show competency in English, maths applied to the workplace
- Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS); they include creative thinking, independent enquiry, reflective learner, effective participator, self management and team working.

Qualification
In the workplace, candidates must complete the following units:
Conform to general workplace safety
Conform to efficient work practices
Move and handle resources
Options (choose any THREE of these)
Install first fixing components
Install second fixing components
Erect structural carcassing components
Maintain non-structural carpentry work
Maintain non-structural carpentry work
Set up and use circular saws
At College, candidates will study the Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery where they will learn advanced techniques of carpentry as well as how to use various tools ranging from hand tools through to power tools:
They will also study functional skills in maths and English at Level 1.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants must be aged 16 or over. They must be employed in a wood trades setting for a minimum of 30 hours a week (including work and College).
Ideally applicants should have at least 4 GCSEs at grade D or above, including maths and English. All applicants will be individually interviewed and assessed.
