Patrick Mayhew was born in 1929 and has lived in West Kent for most of his life. He was educated at Tonbridge School and Balliol College, Oxford. After a period of service in the Army, Lord Mayhew practised as a barrister, becoming a Queen's Counsel in 1972 and a bencher of the middle Temple in 1976. Patrick Mayhew was elected as Conservative MP for Tunbridge Wells in 1974 and represented the constituency until retirement in 1997.
