K College Press InformationCelebrating K College’s First Student Union
Wednesday, 07 December 2011 13:02
On Wednesday 30th November K College held its first ever Student Union away day attended by the 21 committee members elected in last month’s cross campus election.
This inaugural meeting was held at the Ashford International Hotel and the agenda included: agreeing the role of the Student Union; how to raise the profile of the Student Union; agree the individual roles of the committee; the role of the SU within college life and decide on a mission statement.
The day involved activities encouraging the students to think about their role in the Student Union. Notable activities were a modelling/catwalk session where students had to dress a model from the items around them (ice breaker – working together), picking an item from nature and having to sell it (linking it in with raising the profile of the SU) and a blind folded game of cards (listening to others).

What was decided?
Here are the outcomes of the day:
· Organise a full SU away day once a term.
· Invite members of SLT to events.
· Twice a term, SU representatives to meet with Bill Fearon at the campuses.
· In campus meetings Youth Workers to support committee members with discussion/training around their roles.
· In campus meetings Youth Workers to support committee members with discussion/training around next steps.
· Staff members present to hold a review meeting in the near future to include ‘what happens next?’
Hopes for the future
The Student Union representatives at each campus will begin to work, not only across College but also responding to the local needs of the students. We hope that over the coming weeks they will start to put a programme of events and support in place that they will enrich the student experience at K. Watch this space!
