The county’s longest running and highly respected cookery competition Kent Young Chef Award 2011, first launched by Produced in Kent, is set to sizzle for the third successive year, and this time it is coming to K College!
Kent Young Chef Award is the brainchild of local food and drink champions – Produced in Kent – and is aimed at encouraging secondary school children back into the kitchen to create an original main course recipe and to reconnect young people with the ‘Garden of England’ by using seasonal and local ingredients.
The dynamic and exciting competition challenges senior school students in year groups 7-11 to devise and write an original main course recipe using Autumnal and Kentish ingredients (ahead of the deadline on WEDNESDAY 2ND NOVEMBER).
The live cook off will take place in the state-of-the-art venue at K College at Tonbridge on Friday 25th November. The Tonbridge campus is ideally located in Kent and the site has also undergone a major rebuild and refurbishment. The result is the stunning View Restaurant, with breathtaking views across the county. The brand new professional kitchen facilities will provide the stunning setting for the final live cook off in front of celebrity chef Richard Phillips and a panel of judges.Kent Young Chef Award is the brainchild of local food and drink champions – Produced in Kent – and is aimed at encouraging secondary school children back into the kitchen to create an original main course recipe and to reconnect young people with the ‘Garden of England’ by using seasonal and local ingredients.
Julie Monkman, manager at Produced in Kent, said: “With Kent Young Chef Award entering its third year we have a huge ground swell of support from our sponsoring companies and secondary school food technology departments who have applauded what Produced in Kent is doing. Kent Young Chef Award has not only raised young people’s awareness of the fantastic array of produce grown here in the Garden of England – it has seen hundreds of children creating original recipes and creatively cooking again. For those who have made it to the live final it has proved a life changing experience, with several of our finalists now pursuing a career as a chef.”
On Friday 25 November the authors of the eight best recipes will travel to K College for the live cook off with Richard Phillips, of ITV’s Lorraine Kelly and BBC Ready Steady Cook fame and owner of three fine dining restaurants and a pub in Kent who will head up the judging panel.

The two winners of the Junior and Senior titles will not only be crowned with the Kent Young Chef Award 2011 title, but will also be presented with a striking trophy. All eight finalists will receive a host of prizes including a fantastic mini chef experience and lunch at one of Richard Phillips’s restaurants, a branded Kent Young Chef Award apron, framed certificate and their recipes published on the Produced in Kent website.
