K College Press Information'Homeless' Night Raises Charity Cash
Monday, 06 June 2011 08:03
Students from K College who slept outside in the cold in February raised more than £800 for a homeless charity.
They have presented Porchlight with a cheque for £811.09 at the Brook Street Campus following their fund raising event during the winter.
A total of 13 students and 3 staff members took part in a sponsored sleepover, camped out in cardboard boxes at the new college building.
They were inspired by meeting a former drug and gambling addict who spent part of his life on the streets.
Apart from their course leader, Lisa Eaton, who had the best sleeping bag, the students found one night very tough. She said; 'My husband loves climbing so I borrowed one of his sleeping bags and I was tucked up warmly, but I think I was the only one! They got hardly any sleep, and they realised how lucky they were to be able to pop inside to use the loos, and it really made them think about what it would be like to be homeless.'
The early years students were supported by catering students who ran a soup kitchen, as well.
Porchlight's Rachel Van Hoven, accepting the cheque, said: 'This is amazing. It's not just the money raised, it's the sign that these young people want to, and can, help. This is very important to the people we work with. It's important because it shows that they're not forgotten and these students want to help them get their lives back on track.'
