Apprenticeships are work-based qualifications for people aged 16 and above who want to get work experience whilst gaining a recognised qualification. The training combines hands-on learning in the workplace (usually four days a week) with time spent at College (usually one day a week during term time).
Apprenticeships are not just for trades or technical roles. There are also many office or customer-facing roles that are available through the scheme.
Whether they have decided to follow this path after school, or have been offered the opportunity and seized it, young people employed as apprentices show an obvious satisfaction.
Kathryn, 19, declares that she is very happy with the choice she’s made:
“As I’m more of a practical person, the apprenticeship scheme is great for me, I can learn on the job whilst getting paid and gaining a qualification. It gives me real experience which looks great on my CV. I now plan to enrol on an advanced apprenticeship in marketing, to develop my knowledge and skills in marketing and events.”
Martyn, 18, says: “I really enjoy doing an apprenticeship. I like knowing that I get both a qualification and work experience, and earning my own money enables me to have a car and be independent. Because I have to be in an adult environment, I have to behave like one. I now feel more grown-up, more mature; I have had more experience in real life than my mates have.”
Ashleigh, 18, feels that doing an apprenticeship and working has changed her. “It has made me realise the path I would like to follow, and I have matured in the working environment a lot. I have learned many skills but the main one is confidence.”
Tom, 20, thinks an Apprenticeship is the ideal choice: “I like the work environment and I want to carry on progressing in accounting. I will have no debt for university; I will have work experience and a recognised qualification. The choice is obvious for me.”
