American Diner At The View

On 9th March 2011, the VRQ Level 1 Professional Cookery A group planned and ran an American Diner evening in The View at the Tonbridge campus – it’s the first of five student-led events which will run in the restaurant over the next months.

With 65 customers booked, it was almost a full restaurant and the students worked from midday preparing all of the food from scratch. At 4pm the students split into front of house and kitchen; the front of house students, along with Tom Godwin, our Hospitality lecturer, transformed the restaurant into a 1950's American Diner complete with milkshakes, American flag table cloths and staff dressed in 1950's gear!

The menu was in the style of a 1950's burger bar, with lots of different burgers along with chilli dogs, slick dogs, corn fried chicken nuggets and much more. The students looked at every item on the menu and tried to make them as healthy as possible, making almost everything from scratch, including over 80 burger buns!

We had live music with Mr Swing, who sang many 1950's hits, and the students devised a quiz with a grand prize kindly donated by Penhurst Fine Foods. There was also a golden ticket on each of the tables meaning that every table had a winner.

A special thanks to the Whiting & Hammond staff at The View who supported and helped it run smoothly.

It really was a finger lickin' good night so look out for more events coming up soon!

Here is a list of all our Hospitality and Catering courses.
