K College Students Prove They’re SkilledUp

The College’s best young construction students took to the workshop floors on the 3rd March to take part in the K College heat of the annual SkilledUp competition.
Sponsored by Makita and Thanet Tools, five colleges from Kent compete in the inter-county competition testing the skills of apprentices and students from levels 1 to 3. Carpenters, joiners, bricklayers, plasterers and painters and decorators from across K College were pitted against one another in a day-long competition with the winners going onto the regional final in Thanet later in the year. Many of the students had never competed before and the judges were impressed with the quality of work in particularly difficult tests.
Sponsors, Makita UK, the UK’s number one power tool manufacturer, have now been involved in the competition for a couple of years.  Their involvement in SkilledUp is something which was a natural step from their road shows and demonstrations.
“We’re great supporters of this competition,” commented David Chillingworth, regional representative for Makita. “These students are the future of the industry, the competition gives them something to aim for and we’re please to help them on their way.”
With four regional wins since 2007, College lecturers are looking forward to the next stage and taking students forward to the national Skillbuild competition. K College’s Head of Construction, Mike Stanley, was impressed with the energy, enthusiasm and skill showed by the competitors: “All the students today have taken on the challenge and gone for it and the results speak for themselves. It shows how everyone is capable of going the distance you just need to keep going and never give up.”
