Soup Kitchen for Porchlight

On Friday 4th February, the level 3 Professional Catering students in Tonbridge helped raise money for Porchlight, a charity helping the homeless in Kent, in conjunction with the Early Years department. Early Years arranged the event, including a cake sale, which saw them spending the night sleeping outside in front of the College’s Media and Arts Centre. The chefs helped by cooking lunch for any students and staff to buy, raising over £117 in total which is added to the Early Years’ amount.

The chefs made two types of soup: carrot and coriander and spicy winter veg. The students also made a number of artisan breads, including: basil and sea salt; sun dried sun tomato, garlic and thyme; red onion and thyme rye; and, wholemeal breads. They made 60 litres of soup and used their functional skills to work out what profit they would make from each, taking into account ingredient costs and how much to sell them for. Students also designed and planned the menus, helping to complete the unit on menu planning which is a part of their level 3 course.

It was a great morning of baking and selling, with one student comparing it to being on a market stall in London! Daniel Davies, Course Leader Level 3 Professional Cookery, said: “Everyone involved had a good time and it was all for a good cause.” There's a photo-video of the day here.

If you are interested in studying on a hospitality and catering course then the College has a wide range and fantastic facilities. You can see the courses here.
