K College Press InformationWhy K College?

There have been lots of questions about the new name and brand, so here are a few answers…
Why couldn’t it just stay as South Kent or
West Kent ?
The purpose of the change of name is to signify that we are a brand new College – South Kent and
West Kent merged in April 2010 and have been working together since then. The old names no longer fitted and we needed a new name and identity to move us forward as one College – the new identity signifies this.
What does K mean?
It mainly represents the K of Kent but it goes beyond that too. It’s a strong symbol to represent the College – more than just a new name and logo, it’s a whole new brand. It’s not just about the K on its own, it works as a full concept which runs through everything we have including the website and prospectuses. The K also represents the South and West…
Why does the bottom of the K point down?
It doesn’t point down, it points South! The ‘down’ point represents South on a compass while the middle of the K represents the West point, just like two arrow together – it’s to recognise the roots of South Kent and West Kent. It’s subtle but we like it!
Who designed it?
We worked with Rose, a design and branding agency who have previously worked with BAFTA, The Tate, The Savoy and the
V & A
Museum , amongst many others. They developed three concepts based on information the College provided them and a working group chose the one they liked the most.
Why didn’t students design it?
It was a large undertaking across five sites and over the summer months, so wasn’t appropriate as a student project. Design students were involved in the early process and met with the design agency.
Who chose the name?
Students and staff voted on it from a list of 10 possibilities. Then a number of people (including staff, students, key stakeholders and employers) met with Rose to try and develop the ideas behind the new brand including the core beliefs and priorities of the new College. The visual image of K developed in the weeks and months after this.
Why that colour?
We wanted something vibrant and contemporary for our new brand. We were given a number of options and kept coming back to orange – it’s really positive and strong and sits brilliantly with other vibrant colours. As we have five campuses we needed something that worked at all of them. It is also a different and bold colour choice for a College, helping us create an individual identity which marks us apart from the rest.
